We are Crouch’s Italian Deli, a family-owned and family-run Italian food specialist that works closely with family businesses across Italy.
In 2007 Philip Crouch jumped out of a career in the Arts, and guided and supported by his sister and brother in law (www.thehamandcheeseco.com) started trading at the Borough Market.
The Parma hams were bought from a London wholesaler, a slicer was borrowed, and Philip traded from an umbrella stall just on Fridays and Saturdays.
The business has since grown and changed significantly. Our home is now a market stand just inside the main entrance, open every day the Market is open.
We work directly with a range of small-batch producers across Italy, importing weekly to our Borough warehouse. We carry a wide range of Italian products, from almost every region of Italy.
The first thirteen years of the business were an eccentric roller coaster for us, full of learning, challenges and different incarnations. Covid effectively bookended this first phase. We managed to stay open, we lost our Italian team, and we became a proper family business almost overnight
The business had always had a family element, but 2023 sees Jon, Ben and Esther Crouch living in London and involved in every aspect of the business. Though, as you can see, it wasn't our first time in the market.
Brexit continues to batter small produce importers like us, so we genuinely don’t know what form the business will take in five years time. But we are secure in our Borough Market home, and it feels right to launch our new online shop with a new name. The Crouches have their familial roots in Wandsworth, and we are proud to continue this historic ‘south of the river’ connection.
